The prosecution called their final witness this week
in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad
Murray for the death of
Michael Jackson.
Prosecutors maintain Dr. Murray gave The King Of Pop
the fatal dose of propofol among many other medical
mistakes. The defense says Jackson administered the
extra dose to himself and that killed him.
Anesthesiologist Dr. Steven Shafer is an expert in
the field and testified on Dr. Murray’s methods and
the possibility of Jackson giving himself propofol.
Dr. Shafer says inadequate equipment, failure to
stay with the patient immediately after
administering the drug and inadequate record keeping
of Jackson's immediate medical history are
violations of the proper standard of care. Plus, Dr.
Shafer says the propofol bottle was pierced with a
spike and not a needle. Spikes are used to let
doctors infuse drugs through a line, which would
cast doubt on Dr. Murray’s claim that he only gave
Jackson a shot as opposed to a continuous supply.
The defense is scheduled to call for testimony
police, another medical expert and character
witnesses. Dr. Murray could face up to four years in
prison if convicted.
