PATTY JACKSON'S 4-1-1
WEEK ENDING: February 18th, 2011

We gotta keep Singer El DeBarge in our prayers! He has had a major drug relapse, and he is currently in rehab. DeBarge was enjoying a second wave of success when his demons took over, and he succumbed to drugs again. After a 16 year absence from the music scene and a two year stint in prison, DeBarge made a stunning return to the music biz. At 52-years old, he still looked good and his voice sounded great. So many people were happy for him and glad that he was doing well. What happened? What went wrong? Was it the pressure of the music business? Was it too much too soon? In a press release, DeBarge stated he needs to work on himself and deal with years of substance abuse. He has a lot of friends who care for him and want him to do well, including Babyface and Rapper 50 Cent, who are footing the bill for his rehab. DeBarge will be in treatment for a while, and he is being replaced on his current tour by Musiq Soulchild. Musiq will be on the current tour with Ledisi and Kem.

Halle Berry and her baby daddy Model Gabriel Aubry have called a cease fire in their bitter public feud over their daughter Nahla. Their battle was too nasty, too public and getting out of hand. Someone must have pulled Berry’s coattails and told her this was not good for her career. Sources say the two have gone private and are working at being co-parents to their young daughter.

The 2011 BET Honors will air on the network on February 21st. This year’s honorees are Actress Cicely Tyson, Supermodel Iman, Music Legend Herbie Hancock, Johnson Publishing’s Linda Johnson-Rice and Actor/Comedian/Singer Jamie Foxx. Actress Gabrielle Union returns as host.

The Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin was the big stunner at last week’s Grammy Awards. When she appeared on screen it looked as though she lost about 100 pounds. She is still mum about her mystery hospital stay, but she has revealed she plans to go on tour this summer. Was it cancer? Was it bypass surgery? Whatever it is, The Queen Of Soul won’t talk about it. Also at last week’s awards ceremony, Fantasia won her first Grammy, but she wasn’t there to get it. Fantasia refused to show up because she wasn’t asked to participate in the tribute to Aretha Franklin which featured Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams. Producers probably didn’t want all that screaming and hollering. Fantasia’s performance at the Chaka Khan tribute was a loud mess.

Oprah Winfrey insists she is not concerned about the low ratings for her OWN network. The network won’t be fully programmed until the fall, so she knows it’s a work in progress. Some of the hits on the network include her Oprah: Behind The Scenes Of Season 25. Some of the lows are The Gayle King Show, which is surprisingly boring and in need of help. In other Oprah news, Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick has backed out of doing her show. Oprah is an avid dog lover, and Vick is working to repair his image after serving time in jail for participating in a dog fighting ring. Vick cited personal reasons for backing out of the show.

At the movies this week, Big Momma is back. Martin Lawrence returns in Big Momma: Like Father, Like Son.

CNN News Anchor Don Lemon is ready to tell all. Lemon, 44, used to work in Philadelphia at NBC 10, and late last year he revealed he was the victim of sexual abuse. Lemon’s new book about his life, Transparent, comes out this spring.

Kirk Franklin has new album coming out next month. Hello Fear arrives in stores March 22nd. Franklin is also back as host of BET’s Sunday Best, he’s going on a gospel/comedy tour with Steve Harvey.

Actor Jesse L. Martin from Law And Order fame will be one of the stars of Marc Cherry’s new TV show Hallelujah! Cherry is best known as the creator and executive producer of Desperate Housewives.

The TLC network is going to show Niecy Nash’s wedding as a two-hour special. Nash is marrying Jay Tucker in a few weeks, and the network is going show all the details leading up to the big day, including her search for the perfect dress. Sheryl Lee Ralph is going to be the matron of honor with Sherri Shepherd and Wendy Raquel Robinson also as part of the wedding party.

Tom Cruise and Mary J. Blige are coming to Broadway in the musical Rock Of Ages. The musical will feature pop and rock music from the 80’s.

Don’t look for Rev. Al Sharpton on Dancing With The Stars. The producers want him bad, but Sharpton says he has too much to do. He says he’s got smooth moves, and would blow away the completion. But, the reverend’s got a lot on his agenda.

Angela Bassett is the new cover girl of Essence magazine. Bassett just signed on for the movie This Means War, which is being produced by Will Smith. Bassett will star alongside Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon. Bassett will also be starring in the new ABC cop drama One Police Plaza. Plus, she’s got two other films on the way: the T.D. Jakes’ movie Jumping The Broom with Paula Patton in May and the action movie Green Lantern in June.

The African American Museum, 7th and Arch Streets, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Their Annual Heritage Gala is set for March 11th at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott. Honored guests include Director Spike Lee, internationally acclaimed Poet Sonia Sanchez, Artist Moe Brooker, and landmark Educator Dr. Edward Robinson. For more info log onto aampmuseum.org.

Does Prince have a problem with his ex-wife getting married to Singer Eric Benet? YES! At a recent west coast party, Prince had Eric Benet barred from attending because Prince was going to be there. He didn’t want to be in the company of his ex, Manuela Testolini, and her Fiancé Eric Benet. Prince and Manuela were married for five years. Benet is happy and in love with Manuela, and is proving there is life after Halle Berry. Prince is dating a classically trained Ballerina Misty Copeland. Friends figured he would be happy with his new love, but apparently Prince doesn’t want to be anywhere near his ex-wife and Eric Benet.

It’s a new honor for Stevie Wonder. He’s getting inducted into the Apollo Theatre Hall Of Fame on June 13th. Past honorees include Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin.

After a banging start, Paula Abdul’s dance show won’t be renewed for a second season. Live To Dance had no buzz, and lackluster ratings did them in. Maybe now she’ll join Simon Cowell on his new show The X-Factor, which debuts this fall.

Look for a fall wedding for Vivica A. Fox. Fox got an 8-carat ring from her young sweetie Omar “Slimm” White. She’s 46, and he’s 27…....Go Auntie Viv!!

Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Fantasia, Kanye West, Boyz II Men, Charlie Wilson and Stephanie Mills are just some of the performers who will be on hand for The 2011 Essence Music Festival this July in New Orleans.

What’s going with Chad Ochocinco Johnson? The Cincinnati Bengals football/reality star may be having a fifth child with a local woman, who he had been secretly seeing. Ochocinco has been involved with Evelyn Lozada from Basketball Wives. Sources say that could be a fake relationship, and that the quiet sidejawn could actually be pregnant. How sloppy Ocho!

In addition to a third season for The Wendy Williams Show, The Queen Of All Media is going to be hosting a show on the Game Show Network. Williams is the new host of Love Triangle. It’s a mixture of a game show and a talk show. It debuts on April 18th. Wendy is also rumored to be joining the new cast of Dancing With The Stars.
