Mike Tyson is a married man! The past few weeks have been tumultuous
for the former boxing champ. He recently lost his 4-year old
daughter Exodus. She died in a tragic accident at her Phoenix home.
She became entangled in a cord on the family treadmill. Over the
weekend, Tyson married 32-year old Lakiha Spicer. They have a
one-year old daughter together. Spicer is a Philly native. Her
mother is Faridah Ali, the former Rita Spicer. In 2005, Lakiha, also
known as Kiki, was found guilty along with her brother for
participating in a scam at the Sister Clara Muhammad School. Her
brother served a prison sentence for the scam, and Kiki was placed
on probation.
Alicia Keys will be honored at The 22nd Annual Rhythm And Soul
awards. The awards ceremony takes place June 26th. The 12-time
Grammy award winner is getting the Golden Note Award.
Is Whitney Houston ready to talk? Her new album is set to drop on
September 1st, and she has to face the press. But, what will she
talk about it? Sources say Whitney has limitations on what she will
talk about? What about the past seven years, the drug use, recovery
and her ex-hubby, Bobby Brown? Everyone is clamoring to be the first
to interview the superstar, but a lot of the media outlets will not
agree to her terms. If she won’t talk about her past and how she got
over, what will Whitney talk about? Meanwhile, Whitney’s ex, Bobby
Brown, is a new dad. Brown’s fifth child is a boy named Cassius who
was born to Tyson and his girlfriend Alicia Etheridge.
Brian McKnight just signed a new 3 record deal. In addition to a new
solo deal, he will also do a project with his sons Niko and Brian,
Jr.
Jeffrey Osborne will be releasing a new live CD on July 7th. The CD
will feature over three decades of Osborne’s music, from his days
with LTD and his solo career.
Prince needs surgery. The 51-year old pop superstar is getting by
with the help of a cane to walk. He needs double hip replacement
surgery. Sources say he won’t get the surgery because as a
practicing Jehovah’s witness he doesn’t believe in blood
transfusions, and this may be required for the surgery.
The divorce is final between the former Prime Minister of the Turks
And Ciaos Islands, Michael Misick and Actress Lisa Raye. Misick has
moved on and is now openly dating video host Rosci of BET’s 106 And
Park. I say openly dating because they were creepin’ while he was
married to Lisa Raye. Rosci is reportedly sporting a huge diamond
ring and wedding bells could be ringing soon for the two.
What is going on with Lauryn Hill? The singer recently canceled her
European tour citing health reasons.
The new Iron Man II movie with Robert Downey, Jr. and Don Cheadle
hits theatres next May.
Actress Taraji P. Henson has joined the cast of the new Karate Kid
movie. She will play the mom of Jaden Smith, who stars in the
remake. Action star Jackie Chan is also starring. Filming starts
this summer in Beijing.
Singer Al B. Sure has made amends with his son Quincy. Quincy is
Al’s first son by Kim Porter. Porter has three children by Sean “P
Diddy” Combs. A few weeks ago, Quincy, who was raised by Diddy, went
public with the estrangement between him and his father. I had a
chance to interview Al B Sure, and he said it has been tough for him
and his son. And, he asked for prayers. Well, his prayers have been
answered because he recently reconciled with Quincy. Sure’s new CD
Honey I’m Home arrives in stores at the end of this month.
Congrats to Actress Sanaa Lathan. She was just named Jury President
of the American Black Film Institute. Lathan is also headed off to
London to star in the London stage version of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.
Lathan will star as “Maggie, The Cat” along with James Earl Jones
and Phylicia Rashad. The play opens this fall. Debbie Allen will
direct.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is gearing up for the 91st birthday
celebration of the South African leader. The foundation is staging a
big concert on July 18th with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and
Alicia Keys at Madison Square Garden in New York. Later this year, a
movie based on Mandela’s life hits the big screen. Clint Eastwood
directs the movie Invictus, which will star Morgan Freeman as
Mandela and actor Matt Damon.
This year’s VH-1 Hip Hop Honors will pay homage to Def Jam Records.
The famed label celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. In
addition to honoring the labels founders, Russell Simmons and Rick
Rubin, they will pay tribute to the great Def Jam artists such as
Public Enemy, The Beasties Boys, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Ja Rule, DMX,
Ludacris and Kanye West. Tracy Morgan is hosting the Hip Hop Honors
and it will air on Oct 12th on VH1.
The 11-year marriage between Baseball Superstar Barry Bonds and his
wife Liz Watson is over. Watson filed for legal separation citing
irreconcilable differences. They have a young daughter. Watson stood
by Bonds through the height of his steroid scandal. Friends say the
marriage has been on the rocks for a while.
She’s got her money, and she told you so. Tomi Rae Hynie is one
happy lady. The widow of James Brown is $25 million richer. A
court-enforced settlement was made on the James Brown estate. And,
after much legal haggling and a lot of who’s the daddy drama, the
money has been divided. Hynie was recognized as his legal wife and
her son is legally a Brown. Hynie got $25 million dollars. Half of
the estate went to charity, and the other half went to Brown’s other
children who were proven to be his rightful heirs after DNA tests.
Johnny Depp’s new movie Public Enemies opens in theatres July Depp
will plays the infamous 1930’S Gangster John Dillinger.
Usher and the mystery lady….where is his wife Tameka?.......Is this
just a publicity stunt to drum up support for his upcoming album?
Usher has been spotted around town recently, and he has not been
with his wife. So, who is the lady? Spokespeople for Usher say she
is his product manager. So where is Tameka? Ever since she ran off
to Brazil to get plastic surgery without telling her husband she has
been laying low. Tameka almost died during the botched procedure and
Usher had to rescue her. He was very embarrassed by her actions, and
friends say the marriage is filled with tension. Usher mom is now
back as his manager, and she prefers that Tameka lay low feeling her
presence could hurt his upcoming album. Despite having two kids,
executives want Usher to give the appearance that he is free and
single.

inducted into the Apollo theatre legends of fame.

Beverly is getting ready to be released. Grammy award-winning Gospel
Star Donald Lawrence is producing the project featuring Mary J.
Blige, Musiq Soulchild, Mint Condition, Raheem DeVaughn, Ledisi and
The Clark Sisters. The project is the brainchild of Frankie’s son,
Anthony Beverly, who wanted to do something special as the group
celebrates over 40 years in the music business.
At the movies this week, it’s the new Denzel Washington/John
Travolta movie, The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3, is in theatres.
Washington is picking up the weight for co-star John Travolta, who
will not be doing any press for the movie while he continues to
mourn the death of his son. Last January Travolta’s 16 -year son,
Jett, died from a seizure. Washington says since Travolta needs time
to heal, he is ready to do his part in promoting the movie for
Travolta. The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 is a remake of the 70’s classic
that starred Walter Matthau, Martin Balsam and Robert Shaw. The
movie is about a group of madmen who take a subway car hostage. I
saw the movie last week at a screening. It is excellent. Travolta
plays the best bad guy. I loved this movie.
Mary J. Blige is teaming up with the singer/songwriter Ne-Yo for a
duet. Their new song will be featured on the soundtrack to the new
Tyler Perry movie I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The movie starring
Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson and Gladys Knight opens. in theatres
in September. The soundtrack to the movie also features songs from
Knight and Marvin Winans.
Will Smith and his production company, Overbrook Entertainment, are
planning to do a movie about the heroes of the Hurricane Katrina
tragedy. Smith is scheduled to star as one of the heroes. Meanwhile,
Smith’s other half, Jada Pinkett Smith, has a new show coming on the
TNT network. June 16th is the debut of her nursing drama series
Hawthorne.
Chris Rock’s documentary, Good Hair, is coming out this fall. Good
Hair is an in-depth, comical look at hair care in the black
community. Rock teamed up with pop culture critic and Author Nelson
George for the project.
Jamie Foxx will be hosting The 2009
BET Awards on June 28th. Beyonce is scheduled to perform, and The
O’Jays are getting a lifetime achievement award. Ne-Yo and Maxwell
are also scheduled to perform. And, speaking of Jamie Foxx, he is
currently planning a music tour, which will bring him back to Philly
on September 13th.

June 16th.
Teena Marie’s latest CD, Congo Square, arrives in stores on June
9th. Check out Teena Marie this year at The West Oak Lane Jazz And

Beyonce is releasing a new video anthology based on her CD I
Am….Sasha Fierce. Wal-Mart is carrying it exclusively starting June
16th.
Singer Will Downing is marking his 20th anniversary in the music
business with a new release called Classique. The album, his 14th,
arrives in stores on June 16th. The new CD will feature Downing
recording some classics including David Ruffin’s Statue Of A Fool
and Barry White’s I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More. Downing
says he’s excited about the project, and his health has been
progressing since being diagnosed with the muscle disorder
Polymyositis.
Gladys Knight is coming out with a jewelry line. The singer/actress
and business woman is exited about her new venture. The Gladys
Knight Jewelry Line will be sold at major department stores and
through The Home Shopping Network. The Gladys Knight Jewelry Line
debuts in December. Also check her out in the new Tyler Perry Madea
movie I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which opens in theatres in
September.
The Bynum Brothers are back with a new venture. They own Warmdaddy’s
on Columbus Boulevard and had the old Zanzibar Blue in Center City.
Their latest project is called RELISH at 7152 Ogontz Avenue. It
replaces Sadiki’s. RELISH features live jazz music Thursday through

The 15th Annual Essence Music Festival is set for July 3rd, 4th and
5th in New Orleans. Beyonce, John Legend, Eric Benet, Robin Thicke,

Martin. Plus, there’ll be an all-star tribute to Bishop T.D. Jakes.
