Never a dull moment! I guess you can say that about
the past year. 2007 was full of drama, scandals and
surprises. A lot of celebs denied they were
expecting, and now in 2008, we can expect babies
from Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry. Eddie Murphy
denied a baby, but on his birthday, Spice Girl Mel B
gave birth to their daughter Angel Iris Murphy
Brown. Drunk driving was not cool. Many celebs found
out the hard way, including Vivica A Fox, who lost
out on a $3 million Cadillac endorsement deal,
Rapper/Actress Eve, who had to wear an alcohol
monitoring device, and Actor Shemar Moore, who
admits speeding and visiting a gay nude beach do not
go together. The Criminal Minds star says he doesn’t
have a drinking problem, and he is not gay.
Love didn’t last for Whitney Houston and Bobby
Brown, who officially parted ways. Prophetess
Juanita Bynum and her husband Bishop Thomas Weeks
ended their five year marriage after Weeks assaulted
Bynum in an Atlanta parking lot. Shaquille O’Neal
filed for divorce from his wife Shaunie. The
basketball superstar and Shaunie made a great
couple, but behind the scenes there was drama over
stolen money, hunky personal trainers and pregnant
Tyler Perry became a major box office force with his
latest movie, Why Did I Get Married. Next year, he
hopes to strike gold again with Angela Bassett in
Meet The Browns.
Usher started off the year a single man. Then he
hooked up with his married stylist, Tameka Foster.
Foster then left her husband and her three kids to
be with Usher. Foster became pregnant, divorced her
husband, and proceeded to marry Usher. But wait, her
refusal to sign a pre-nup caused a disruption in the
ceremony. She had to marry him a week later once she
agreed to sign on the dotted line. Late this year,
Usher Raymond, IV was born.
Sports stars also made headlines, including Michael
Jordan. He didn’t pay attention to the lyrics in
Johnnie Taylor’s song, It’s Cheaper To Keep Her.
Jordan paid a record $170 million to his wife
Juanita to end their marriage.
Olympic Star Marion Jones finally told the truth,
and it cost her everything. For years, the former
Olympic darling denied using steroids then she
fessed up. Everything was pointing to her, from her
ex-husband to her baby daddy. Jones lost everything,
her mother’s house, endorsements, thousands of
dollars, the Olympic medals and records and the
public’s trust. Jones may be spending a good deal of
2008 in jail.
Michael Vick, the star quarterback of the Atlanta
Falcons, has been dealing with bad headlines since
the start of his career. There’s the poor attitude
and a lawsuit by a woman who claims he gave her
herpes, but nothing brought his world down like the
dog fighting charges. Vick was accused of running a
dog fighting ring at his Virginia home. Vick fessed
up, and now he is in jail. He may be out by the end
of 2008, but can he resurrect his football career
Ron Isley got a new home. For years, he played with
the tax man, and this time he lost. The famed lead
singer of The Isley Brothers is now in jail serving
a three year sentence at a federal prison in
Indiana. Isley was found guilty of tax evasion, tax
fraud and cashing his dead brother’s royalty checks.
The 74-year old singer left behind his young wife
and two babies.
Dr. Donda West, the mother of Rapper Kanye West,
died less than 24 hours after getting plastic
surgery. Dr. West received a tummy tuck, lipo and a
breast reduction. She was warned she was not a good
candidate for surgery, but she went ahead anyway
with TV’s Dr. Jan Adams. Adams was known for his
work on The Other Half and The Discovery Channel,
but he was not a board certified doctor. Adams has
had to settle several lawsuits with patients who
suffered botched surgeries through him. Dr. West
released a book with her famous son earlier this
year, and the rapper has been left devastated by her
The James Brown family was in the spotlight. The
Godfather of Soul died last year on Christmas 2006,
but it took the family 73 days to come to an
agreement over what to do with his remains. One of
his daughters had the body stored in her home in a
crypt. Everybody and their momma came forward with
tales of Brown being their daddy. DNA tests were
ordered, and by the end of the year, four more Brown
children were discovered. Needless to say the known
children were not happy with this news. Between the
trustees stealing from the Brown estate and the new
Brown children, there would be no money left for
them. The day before Brown was memorialized; one of
his daughters stabbed her husband. The husband
survived the attack, but there was more drama to
come. At the time of his death, his last known
companion Tomi Rae Hynie refused to take part in DNA
to determine whether Brown was the father to her
six-year old son, James Brown, III.
